A wealthy philanthropist receives a lengthy sentence for hitting and running.
Rebecca Grossman, a well-known California socialite and co-founder of a burn center foundation in Los Angeles, received a sentence ranging from 15 years to life in prison on Monday. Her sentence follows the hit-and-run deaths of two boys: Mark Iskander, 11, and his brother Jacob, 8. The Western Australian pair was crossing a street in Westlake Village on Sept. 29, 2020.
## The Incident: Speeding and Tragedy in a Crosswalk
Grossman was speeding when she fatally hit the Iskander brothers in a crosswalk that fateful night. However, her recklessness at the wheel would result in an immeasurable loss for the Iskander family and for society as a whole. The violent and unnecessary loss of two innocent lives has rocked their family and our community. “Ms. Grossman’s complete disregard for human life has left a grieving family to mourn the loss of their loved one.”
Conviction and Sentencing: Justice is Finished
A jury in February found Grossman guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and one count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. Although prosecutors asked for a stiffer sentence of 34 years to life, the court opted for 15 years to life behind bars for Grossman. With a 60-year sentence, Grossman will almost certainly die behind bars.
A Mother’s Heartache: Lack of Remorse
And during the sentencing, Nancy Iskander, mother to the boys, lambasted Grossman, saying he had caused her an incredible amount of pain and aggravation by the lack of remorse he had shown. “Never once did she apologise for murdering my two babies,” said Nancy. Grossman, in turn, wrote a letter to the judge defending herself, saying, “I am not a murderer” and also stating that “as God is my witness, I did not see anyone or anything in the road.”.
The Grossman Burn Foundation: A Sordid Legacy
Support Local Rebecca Grossman, with her husband, Dr. Peter H. Grossman, is a co-founder of the Grossman Burn Foundation. The foundation, an affiliate of the Grossman Burn Centers, was first formed by Dr. A. Richard Grossman, the father to Peter Grossman. Rebecca Grossman’s charitable purpose, however, now rubs dirt in the foundation’s public reputation.
A documented assessment of the community’s response to calming the fear provides reassurance and closure.
The family gets justice, the sheriff says. The Iskanders have lived each day with a pain no parent should ever experience,” said Allen Castellano, chief of the county sheriff’s North Patrol Division. “By the reckless actions of this individual, she had a total lack of concern for the lives and safety of others in our community, resulting in a tragedy beyond comprehension that tore a family apart and stole the bright futures of two children,” Castellano said.

We have made a correction about the organisation that Rebecca Grossman co-founded. Correction: Previous versions of this story incorrectly gave the foundation’s name as the Grossman Burn Centre.
Outro: A Lesson in Why You Should Never Be Stupid*
The deaths of Mark and Jacob Iskander are a sobering example of the devastation that can result from irresponsible behaviour behind the wheel. The sentencing for Rebecca Grossman not only brings closure to the Iskander family but also serves as a reminder that driving is a major responsibility, and every time we sit behind the wheel, we must be sure we are up to the task of driving with care and consideration. While the community grieves the loss of two young lives, there is now the belief that an event like this will never happen again.
