The Champions Trophy 2025 edition will take place in Pakistan in September, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament, as stated by Cricbuzz, is to commence on February 19 and go on until March 9.
Multiple sources from the cricket boards and the ICC have confirmed the news to HT. The 20-day window will host the eight-team competition, marking the first Champions Trophy match since Pakistan’s shocking victory over India at the Oval in 2017.
No schedule is yet confirmed, but with February 19 being a Wednesday and March 9 falling on a Sunday as well, matches will be played over 19 days, just like last year when the 2017 edition ran from June 1 to 18.
We have informed member boards about the revised dates, enabling them to adjust their league calendars. Meanwhile, the IL T20 has confirmed dates for its third season from January 11 to February 9, which will clash with the SA20’s third season from January 9 to February 8.
The ICC and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be praying that India agrees to play in the tournament in Pakistan. The current BJP government’s geopolitical climate suggests that they will continue their policies towards Pakistan, but they have not made any official statement on this matter.
Should tensions persist, they may consider adopting a hybrid model similar to the Asia Cup, where a portion of the competition took place in the UAE last year. A source with knowledge of the case informed Cricbuzz that a more complete picture could form in the next two months.
We expect clarification through the ICC’s annual convention in Colombo this July. By that date, the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) should have a clearer idea of the government’s view on the tournament.
The PCB, in turn, has only earmarked Lahore as the venue for India’s matches. — Photo courtesy: PCB We have made this attempt to ensure Indian fans don’t have to travel all the way to the Middle East to support them, as the distance from Lahore to Dubai isn’t as great.
