Television doctor Michael Mosley, who came to fame by popularizing the 5:2 diet, has gone missing while on holiday on the Greek island of Symi.
He added that they are conducting searches in impassable areas using a police dog and drone.
The deputy mayor of Symi informed BBC News that Athens is sending a helicopter to assist.
Dr. Mosley, 69, last seen by his wife, with whom he arrived at the beach on Wednesday, had gone for a walk to the center of the island, the Greek Police said.
A police spokesperson informed BBC News that his wife, who also reported him missing, found his phone at their pad.
The 67-year-old presenter is famous for shows such as the BBC series Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, and has also popped up on the BBC’s The One Show and ITV’s This Morning.
When officers on the island couldn’t find Dr. Mosley, they enlisted the help of the Greek fire department in the capital, Athens. More firefighters, flown from nearby Rhodes to Symi, arrived by 14:00 local time (12:00 BST).
Firefighters, volunteers, and police officers have been trying to find him with the help of a police dog and a drone.
The rescue team is searching in the Pedi area of Symi after a local woman reported spotting him there on Wednesday, Symi’s deputy mayor, Ilias Chaskas, told BBC News.
He stated that although the location is known to be dangerous, he had seen Dr. Mosley on a safe road nearby.
On Wednesday, a community group posted a Facebook post with a picture of him in a blue cap, polo shirt, and shorts, stating that he was unwell and missing.
“Have you seen this man? It added: “He left… to walk back from Sikaminia [Agios Nikolaos beach] at about 13.30, but he did not get home.”
The Greek island, which is part of the Dodecanese and home to approximately 2,600 people, is just off the coast of Turkey.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are assisting the family of a British man who is missing in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Dr. Mosley’s previous documentary work includes the Emmy-winning BBC science documentary The Human Face (2001), examining the science behind humans’ perceptions of beauty.
In addition, he writes a weekly column in the Daily Mail and is responsible for multiple television programs about diet and exercise—think Channel 4’s Michael Mosley: Who Made Britain Fat?
Dr. Mosley is no stranger to slow-carb diets, having previously suggested intermittent fasting diets like the 5:2 diet and the Fast 800 diet.
He has four children with his wife, Clare Bailey Mosley, who is a doctor, author, and proponent of healthy living.
The pair of them recently appeared at the Hay Festival, where Dr. Mosley hosted a special edition of his Radio 4 series and podcast Just One Thing.
