Zhilei Zhang scored the most significant victory of his career in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, and it could very well have marked the end for former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. And the lightning-quick Zhang, 41, of China, nailed Wilder with a perfectly timed counter right hook that had him staggered. After a completely defenceless Wilder, Zhang (27-2-1, 21 KOs) stormed in and smashed Wilder with another right hand that KO’d the American hard.

Wilder, 38, was up before the count of ten, albeit shaky on his knees, and the referee correctly waved off the fight 1:51 into Round 5. — “I took a few punches, but, yes, he hits hard,” said Zhang, speaking through an interpreter, of Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs), one of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history.

“I really appreciate him.” ot.  He’s a powerful puncher. I would have managed to chop off his right hand. Wilder (42-2-1) has lost four of his last five fights, including a unanimous decision defeat to Joseph Parker in December and two to Tyson Fury during their heavyweight title trilogy. Before the fight, Wilder said, “What I do or what I say—this might be the final time you see Deontay Wilder in the ring. Zhang was also recovering from his defeat to former heavyweight world champion Parker. Zhang rocked Parker twice in March, but the bell saved him both times, despite Zhang losing on points both times. The race to the championship begins again. Oleksandr Usyk, an undisputed champion, currently holds this title after defeating Fury in Riyadh a few weeks ago. According to ESPN BET, Zhang was a -150 favorite over Wilder. According to ESPN’s latest rankings, Zhang ranked as the sixth heavyweight, while Wilder entered the ring seventh. Zhang finished with a silver in the super heavyweight class, and Wilder took a bronze in the heavyweight division. On Saturday, they looked like fighters in different weight classes, with Zhang outweighing Wilder, 282.8 to 214.6, by 68.2 pounds. In the boxing heavyweight class, weight holds no significance. Zhang used his size advantage to control Wilder, getting him to the ropes and keeping him there. As Wilder cocked his right hand back, as he usually does, Zhang, a southpaw, landed numerous right hooks that did little damage. In the fifth, when he began unleashing his most powerful weapon, Zhang came alive. It was only a chopping right hand from Wilder, and Zhang responded with his own right to end the fight. It was a winning performance that rounded off a flat-out 5-0 win for Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions over rival U.K. promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing in a special 5 vs. 5 team concept devised by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority. Alalshikh presented Warris with a very large check for $3 million after Zhang won by TKO.
